Today the Gannon Building was evacuated due to a fire emergency. The emergency started when staff noticed a lot of smoke coming from the StarZone. Due to the excessive amount of smoke, those who were located in the Gannon Building at the time were evacuated via fire alarm around 8:20 a.m.

“Yes, so I came here at 7:15 a.m. and then I came right here and nothing was wrong. But when I came in, I smelled something weird, you know?” Shahad Hasan, a student employee who works at the Center for Student Support front desk in the StarZone, said. “And then I started like seeing smoke.” Hasan then left the building.

The Lansing Fire Department evaluated the area, and students and employees were cleared to reenter the building around 9 a.m. The area where the fire began was taped off for further inspection. An electrical fire was suspected.

The smell of smoke lingered in the StarZone and academic advising areas. Many employees who work directly in or near the StarZone put on masks. StarZone employees eventually relocated to the TLC, and the academic advisors relocated to areas around campus as needed.
