April is recognized as Alcohol Awareness Month, and LCC’s Counseling Services and Office of Student Compliance hosted an interactive event to promote education about substance use and safety. Events like this are important because they help students understand the risks of misuse and make safer decisions. This event was held on April 20 in the Gannon Commons.

The event included hands-on activities like a pedal cart course with impairment goggles to simulate different levels of intoxication. This allowed students to experience how alcohol can affect one's coordination and perception. “We also have this little game, too, where you can see what a normal pour is and see how close you are to pouring what's considered to be a standard drink size,” Student Compliance Liaison Ann Marie Foley said.

In addition to the activities, the event included promotional items. There were information packets and fidget toys students could take. Foley hopes that the event will teach students about the dangers of driving under the influence, whether from drugs or from alcohol. “It's about education,” she said. “We're not trying to scare people into things.” However, Foley hopes that students who choose to take part in alcohol or legal forms of drugs understand those choices are okay, but it’s important to be responsible and not put yourself or others at risk.

Students can access campus counseling services for support with substance use, recovery, or mental health needs. While programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) are not offered on campus, counselors can help connect students with available resources in the community.
