On July 22, LCC hosted its Veteran Benefits Bootcamp from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event was free and open for any current or former LCC students, veterans, military service members, and military-connected individuals across the Greater Lansing area.
The bootcamp provided personalized assistance for veterans or those with military benefits, such as guidance on maximizing education benefits, how to navigate the GI Bill and assistance with completing applications for benefits, DEERS and ID card services.
“We just wanted to help our vets,” Director of the Center for Veteran and Family Support Andrew Cosgrove said. “We wanted to provide the resources that they may not know exist. The least we could do is try to provide assistance and set them up with the folks that can provide it. Whether we help one person or 100, it doesn’t matter to us. We owe it to them.”
The turn out for the event was 15 veterans. “It’s not so much about the numbers for us though. It’s more about making sure we can provide assistance to whomever needs it,” Cosgrove explained. “As long as one vet shows up who wants help being connected to available resources, we are happy to host events like this.”
Veterans are an integral part of LCC’s culture on campus. In fact, according to the LCC veteran affairs website, Lansing Community College is ranked as a “Best for Vets” institution by the Military Times. This bootcamp is one more resource to assist veterans with their transition to college.
