On March 18, the Office of Empowerment hosted their third Taste of Culture event, focusing on Ireland. Focusing on Irish culture during March was not an accident. The day before the event was Saint Patrick’s Day, which honors the patron saint of Ireland who brought Christianity to the island. March is also Irish American Heritage Month.

The Taste of Culture events often try to listen to students to gauge interest in learning more about different cultures. “Dillon Bowling actually brought it to our attention,” Equity Coordinator KyLee Carter said. “This time we’re focusing on Ireland just to celebrate all of our students with Irish heritage and then also immerse some of our students in some of that new culture.”

Some of the dishes served at the event were corned beef on rye bread with whole grain mustard provided by the New Daily Bagel, a local Lansing business located just a few blocks away from LCC’s Downtown Campus. The Irish Pub, located on west Saginaw Street, also provided Irish potatoes as a side. For drinks, there was an Irish tea made with black tea, honey and goat’s milk.

“The students are loving the free food and I don’t blame them,” Carter said. “It’s a really cool way to learn about a culture that’s different than your own.” The Office of Empowerment has another Taste of Culture event coming up in early April. The event will run from 12 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. on April 8 and will spotlight Arab American culture.
